Investigation 1 - Mathematical Reflections
In the past classes we have done in math we have been learning about angles and polygons. For this blog I will be answering the questions down below about angles and polygons.
1. What are the common properties of ALL polygons?
All polygons have:
2. a) What does the measure in degrees tell you about an angle? The gap between the initial side and the terminal side. The degree of the angle tells you if the angle is acute angle (less than 90 degrees), right angle (90 degrees), obtuse angle (more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees), straight angle (180 degrees) or reflex angle (more than 180 degrees).
b) What are some common benchmark angles?
Some benchmark angles (a reference to find an exact one) for angles are:
Use benchmark angles
Close to
First try to find out what angle it is. Like is it a acute angle, a obtuse angle, a straight angle, or a reflex angle.
Next you try to imagine which benchmark angle is it closest to.
Finally, you estimate the angle in relation to the benchmarks.
Example:
Step one: (First try to find out what angle it is. Like is it a acute angle, a obtuse angle, a straight angle, or a reflex angle.)
These are all the questions for the blog post.
1. What are the common properties of ALL polygons?
All polygons have:
- More than three sides
- All have closed sides
- All have straight lines
- None of the criss-cross (no intersecting)
2. a) What does the measure in degrees tell you about an angle? The gap between the initial side and the terminal side. The degree of the angle tells you if the angle is acute angle (less than 90 degrees), right angle (90 degrees), obtuse angle (more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees), straight angle (180 degrees) or reflex angle (more than 180 degrees).
b) What are some common benchmark angles?
Some benchmark angles (a reference to find an exact one) for angles are:
- 30 degrees
- 45 degrees
- 60 degrees, 90 degrees
- 180 degrees
- 360 degrees
3. How do you estimate angle measures using benchmark angles, so you can fine the accurate measurements without tools?
Use benchmark angles
Close to
First try to find out what angle it is. Like is it a acute angle, a obtuse angle, a straight angle, or a reflex angle.
Next you try to imagine which benchmark angle is it closest to.
Finally, you estimate the angle in relation to the benchmarks.
Example:
Step one: (First try to find out what angle it is. Like is it a acute angle, a obtuse angle, a straight angle, or a reflex angle.)
Step two: (Next you try to imagine which benchmark angle is it closest to.)
Step 3: ( Finally, you estimate the angle in relation to the benchmarks.)
How to find accurate measurements with tools?
Use a protractor. First what you do is line up the bottom of the angle with the bottom line of the protractor with 180(in red for the inside) and 0 (in black in the inside). If you have a half circle with a line in between make sure that line is lined up with both two angle lines. After, double check to make sure the line (the angle line) is straight with the protractor line. After, look where the other line of the angle is. If need be take a ruler straight and look where the line is. Then you've got it.
Example: With 90°.
