Telunas Reflections

This is what I did. First we went on the ferry, then we went on the long boat to the school. When we got to the school we had a snack. Then we started teaching the kids what we have been preparing for the last 6 weeks. My partner and I taught them with matching the cards and guessing what the pictures mean in english. After we taught we had lunch. The students also danced for us and the boys did the drum ceremony. We had recess and then went on the long boat again to Telunas. We got a drink there to refresh us and Ms.H told us which cabin to go to. We got changed and we could go to the beach or the dock or both. Then we showered and ate dinner. We then had a bomb fire. We prepared a skit in our rooms with our travailing groups. Showed it at the bomb fire and then we told jokes and scary stories. We went and watched the stars and went to bed. In the morning we ate breakfast and then split half th...

Service Learning Semester Two Reflection

Today we went to the Christalite Methodist Home for our second time in the school year. My group's craft was making rings and it went well because once we taught them how to do it some people got the idea and did it by there selves  and used there hands to point to the things they wanted. They had a fun time too with all the rings they did and did a great job. Even though some seniors  spoke a different language they used there hands to communicate.   The difference between this trip and the last one for me was that last time I was really confused on how to teach them the instructions because it was may first time. On the second time I went I knew how to teach them so I could teach them more easily about how to do it. I also learned on the second trip that you can use your hands to communicate with the seniors on the first time I was thinking how can I communicate without words and freaking out. What I really enjoyed the most about today was that when we said the ins...

Service Learning Semester 2

Today we read the The Lion and the Mouse  Aesop's fables. The theme of this story was friendship. Friendship can do anything because if you have friendship you can count on people that they are with you and count on them to be there. In The Lion and the Mouse  since the Lion didn't eat the mouse the mouse got away and when the Lion got trap and the mouse wasn't eaten the mouse saved the Lion. Friendship because if he ate the mouse the mouse could've never saved the Lion but it was friendship that saved the day.    I think that this connects to the Christalite Methodist home because the residents in the Methodist home and when we come it's a big thing for them because they don''t have children anymore. So when we make crafts or something I think it is friendship and just sitting side by side to each other.    Our class goals for our next visit to the Methodist home could me: Try to show our time more meaningful To try to ...

Service Learning Reflection Semester One

We prepared for our Field Trip to the Christalite Methodist Home by looking up on the computer on what we can do and then talking about it at home. Then we started voting as a class on what to do while we go to the Christalite Methodist Home. We picked decorating styrofoam balls and decorating Christmas trees. We got it all planned out. Ms. Hooykaas bought the supplies and then showed it to us. We also read a book kind of like the same message to for the Christalite Methodist Home. The message was caring about people.     On the tour of the home I found that the people that work there are really kind to the residents. They have volunteer doctors if they need them. It was cool how much they cared about them.     During the craft activity I was doing the craft with Mina. Our resident didn't want to do the craft so we did it. We asked hime to pick out the colors and what he wanted to put on the craft. Even though he didn't do it, making the craft was s...

Tabitha Jump-A-Thon -Visit by Janne Ritske

Today, Janne Ritske will be visiting us to discuss her foundation, Tabitha.  We will be doing the Jump-a-thon on   Tuesday, 21 January   to raise funds for this worthy cause.      I learned that all they want to do is make dreams happen. A year when they graduated 25,446 families with 203,568 dependents. What this means to me is that when they are making there dreams come true the Cambodian's seem to really think they care about them and acknowledge them. Each new water well changes the lives up to 40 people. This tells me they are really glad to have us helping them. They help build houses and schools for cambodians and get them clean water from the pumps. It is so amazing how they help them so much. She adopted a girl from Cambodia too. She loans money to the cambodian's and she pays to make the houses and schools. She cares so much about them. Questions: What idea got you in to starting Tabitha by helping Cambodia? Who makes the Tabitha stuff? ...
